Online education has come a long way — but most e-learning platforms still feel flat. Video calls, slide decks, and chat windows get the job done, but they don't replicate the energy or structure of a real classroom environment.

Fusion Softtech built a Virtual Classroom platform that takes a different approach. Using Open Wonderland — an open-source 3D virtual world framework — the platform places students and teachers inside a rendered, interactive classroom environment. Users don't just watch or listen; they navigate spaces, collaborate in real time, and interact with content the way they would in a physical setting.

Designed for educational institutions and e-learning providers looking to offer students a more engaging, immersive alternative to conventional video-based online learning.

Business Need

Existing online learning tools were functional but lacked the collaborative, spatial experience of a real classroom. The goal was to build a platform that made remote learning feel less like watching a recording and more like actually being in class — with real-time interaction, shared spaces, and collaborative tools built in.

  1. Built the platform on Open Wonderland — an open-source Java-based virtual world framework — leveraging jMonkeyEngine for 3D rendering to create interactive, navigable classroom environments

  2. Developed the backend using Java Servlets and Jersey (JAX-RS) to handle user sessions, role management, and real-time interactions across the virtual environment

  3. Implemented real-time text and audio communication so students and teachers could collaborate naturally within the 3D space without switching to external tools

  4. Built drag-and-drop content sharing directly into the virtual world — allowing teachers to bring PDFs and images into the classroom environment on the fly

  5. Designed and integrated an interactive whiteboard supporting simultaneous drawing and writing by both students and teachers in real time

  6. Created distinct virtual spaces — a student cafeteria and teacher staff rooms — to replicate the social structure of a physical campus within the platform
